Coding Practice!

This year Room 8 has set a goal to all become super star coders!

We are using courses on the site code.org to learn new coding skills and create code sequences.

The students move through the different courses and levels to develop and advance their skills.

It has been awesome seeing some of the students get so excited about these new part of our digital learning.

Here are some of the students screenshots from the session today!

Kiwican: Body Language

Today we had another awesome Kiwican lesson.
Mr M and Mr George taught us about Body Language and how it is a really important part of communication.

Did you know that 90% of the communication we have with others is through Body language!

We did some exercises where the students got to act out different types of body language and different emotions that they can express.

Here are some photos from our lesson!

Hamish and Timote acting out being 'shocked'!
Students acting out being 'hungry'!
Students acting out being 'tired'
We also spoke about what it is like to be speaking and reading negative body language. The class agreed that it can make you feel bad when people aren't focused on you or listening - so we need to make sure that as listeners we are showing with our bodies that we are interested and respecting the person who is talking.

Thanks Kiwican team for another awesome session!

Fe'ao's awesome recount!

Here is Fe'ao's recount. He did really well to include lots of detail and Hamish helped him add photos to make it engaging.

Great work Fe'ao!

Pancake Recounts!

This term for writing we are focusing on recounts.

A recount is when you re-tell an experience or sequence of events.

To help us get excited about recounts and practice writing them - we made pancakes in class!

On Thursday before morning tea, we made pancakes together. We sat on the mat with Miss Morrison and read through the ingredients and then split into two groups. Each group had their own bowl and ingredients. We had to double the recipe to make enough for everyone - so we got a bit of maths practice too!

We all took turns in our groups mixing the ingredients together and pouring them onto the hot plate.
After all the pancakes were cooked we sat at the tables and ate them with jam and butter.

It was a really fun experience and we got some great writing out of it!

Here are some photos from the experience:

Welcome to Room 8 2017!

Kia ora and welcome to Room 8's blog for 2017!

We have a small class of year 5 & 6 students, and our teacher Miss Morrison!

This year is going to be full of exciting learning and adventures so make sure you follow this blog to stay up to date!

We are currently in week 3 of term 1, our inquiry topic for the first three weeks is Hauora! This means ones well-being, their physical, mental, social and spiritual wellbeing. All four of these areas add up to build someones well-being.
We have been learning about why it is important to take care of these areas and how we can do it.

Here is some of our learning from last week:

Taonga's great work on exercise and sleep

Hope L's work on physical health!

We also had some fun last week with Room 7, the other year 5 & 6 class! Their teacher is Miss Ashley and we are very lucky to be able to do so many fun activities with our classroom neighbours!

We played sports with them and did some art for the corridors.

We are really excited for the rest of the term and more time as a class.
Make sure to comment and follow our page so you can stay up to date with our adventures.
